Stylistic Variation In Three English Translations Of The Dead Sea Scrolls

Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 different English translations were published. In this article the stylistic variation of three of these translations are analysed. It is suggested that the issue of stylistic variation boils down to linguistically inscribed preference in the choice and construction of discourses in the translated texts, i.e. a case of identifying the norms governing the patterning of translational behaviour within a given socio-cultural milieu. Vermes' translation demonstrates the tendency to simplify the language used in translation. In the translation by Wise, Abegg & Cook there is an overall tendency to spell things out rather than leave them implicit. The translation of García Martínez demonstrates the trend towards general textual conventionality as opposed to textual creativity as in the case of the translation of Wise, Abegg & Cook and Vermes.Acta Theologica Vol. 2 2007: pp. 143-16

Translation studies and Bible translation

An overview of recent developments of the discipline that studies the activity of translation, as well as the implications for Bible translation, is presented. Starting off with a discussion on the name and content of the discipline, an overview of some translation approaches focusing on the source text, the process of translation, the reception of translated text and the cultural-social bound character of translation is offered. Since the early eighties there has been a tendency within translation studies to move away from the normative and prescriptive approaches to translation and to adopt a descriptive approach towards the study of translated literature. Descriptive translation theorists attempt to account not only for textual strategies in the translated text, but also for the way in which the translation functions in the target cultural system. The implications that these recent theoretical developments bare for Bible translation practice, criticism of Bible translations, the training of theologians and Bible translators are finally indicated

Regulating the negative externalities of enterprise cluster innovations:Lessons from Vietnam

Innovation has been acknowledged as contributing to development, in particularly inclusive innovations that involve and benefit poorer groups in developing countries. However, such innovation may have negative externalities. Most often external regulation is required to reduce these effects. However, it is often not enough, and in many developing countries the required institutional context is not present to enable external regulation. Hence a case may be made for internal regulation of inclusive innovation. Helping to fill the gap in our knowledge on internal regulation of innovation externalities in developing countries, we explore four cases of innovation in informally-organised small producers’ clusters Vietnam. This article focuses on parents' educational needs concerning their physically disabled pre-school child with the view to placement in an inclusive learning environment. Support services include, among other things, preparation of these children to enter an inclusive learning environment, and parent education to reach this goal. Therefore parent education with a view to promoting the success of inclusion is of utmost importance, by focusing on those skills needed by physcially disabled children to perform sucessfully in the inclusive classroom milieu. The goal of parent education is to mediate those skills necessary to become an integral part of regular classroom activities and be accepted within the inclusive learning environment ; to facilitate a functional family life and educational atmosphere as basis for further growth ; to promote the least restrictive educational environment at home ; to facilitate modeling of socially acceptable behaviour patterns ; to promote a cognitively, emotionally, and socially stimulating learning environment at home ; to provide interpersonal interaction with nonhandicapped siblings and peers; and to remove stereotypes and stigmata attached to physically disabled children and to facilitate successful adjustment within the inclusive learning environment and the broader community during adulthood. Foreignising as translation strategy in prescribed books for second-language learners

The focus of the paper is to describe the transfer of culture-specific elements of the Afrikaans novel By die Lêplek van die Leeus (In the Lions' Den) by Louise Prinsloo to English. This is a prescribed book for Afrikaans second-language learners in Grade 11 in the Limpopo Province. The story deals with intercultural and interracial issues of a post-apartheid South Africa on a matter-of-fact, straightforward level which is appealing to young people who have to cope with such issues in their everyday lives. The story contains many elements from different cultures and languages: there is an Afrikaner community, a Zulu community and a Sotho boyfriend. This novel, with its incorporation of the languages of different cultural groups, is cast in the postcolonial mould. The translation is placed even more firmly within this mould because yet another language and culture come into play. An industry analysis of pharmaceutical production in South Africa

The purpose of this research is to investigate the shifting structure of pharmaceutical production in South Africa and examine the global and local factors that have contributed to this change. Generally, these factors have resulted in a decline in the number of pharmaceutical manufacturers in South Africa and in particular manufacturing operations owned by multinational companies. Simultaneously the global demand for generic medicines has increased due to their ability to improve access to affordable medicines. As a result, the supply of medicines in South Africa is being increasingly met by imported generic medicines and to a lesser extent locally manufactured generic medicines. These changes, together with a turbulent and sometimes uncertain regulatory environment, have led to interesting dynamics and changes within the structure of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in South Africa

Die rol van taalvaardigheid in die verband tussen matrieken universiteitsprestasie van swart eerstejaarstudente

This article highlights some of the factors that play a role in the academic success of black first year students who receive non mother-tongue education in English. Students in the Faculties of Economic and Management Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, as well as the Humanities/Law at the University of the Free State were involved in the study. It was evident that both matric performance and language ability have predictive value. It was also found that the predictive value of these variables differed between the various faculties (which implies that students’ field of study should be taken into account when decisions regarding access with success is made).Key words: language proficiency, matric performance, academic achievement, non mother-tongue education, black first year students.Hierdie artikel werp lig op sommige faktore wat ’n rol speel in die akademiese prestasie van swart eerstejaarstudente wat nie-moedertaalonderrig in Engels ontvang. Studente in die Fakulteite Ekonomiese en Bestuurswetenskappe, Natuur- en Landbouwetenskappe, asook Geesteswetenskappe/Regte aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat is by die studie betrek. Dit het geblyk dat beide matriekprestasie en taalvaardigheid voorspellingswaarde het.
